Oi, Mirla!

What a great video! Thank you so much for posting it!…  I felt so identified with it.!…  I think I could hardly count the houses I have lived in the last 10 years or so… but everywhere I lived in (no matter for how short) I had the strong need to do a little something with  the place…. to make it ‘ home’ (ok, it may also have to do with being an architect!)…  Holland is where I live now, but I still find it difficult to find myself at home in this country, so a big part of my life takes place at my own house… Specially now, having two small children, my house has become such an important place to me… In my house, I always, truly feel at home:

Home now!

migration

Hi Andrea

You can see that I have been very influenced by others in this blog!! This drawing  is linked with one of Leonor. H.

This shapes  suggest me ideas…birds create a group while they are migrating, but for us, migration it’s a personal matter. As individuals. We are alone, in front on new realities, in front of  unknow territories. We  have to invent ourselves in front of a new human group. Like you said, we have to fit in a new dress, or costume?

To everybody

While I am still waiting Kajsa reply, I thought about sharing this video with you all.

It has been made by a brazilian friend (Milena Galli) who has studied in Germany and for me it translates this need of a home, wherever we are. It also talks about the lasting of things, which I think is also a great question when we are not in our country and also has to do with jewellery and all sorts of creation: should things last?

Well, I love the video. I hope it can be inspiring.

Introduction

Wannsee1

This is Berlin in summertime!!!
It is absolutely my city …. in this moment.
You have everything you want. It is a huge, exciting, moving, sparkling metropolis. People are very creative, productive, inspiring. Sometimes they are rough from the outside but they have a big hart. It is cheep to live here, you have the space you need around you and the district you live in, is like a village. I really love to be here and I do this already since 11 years.

Before I lived for 13 years in the Netherlands mainly in Amsterdam, I did my studies there and all my roots of jewel making are grown in this city. I also love Amsterdam.
It is like a village but with the ambitions to be metropolis.
Probably I like all the cities where I live, you get used to them and now since I’m in love with a Swedish man, who knows what will happens in the future…

This is another side of Berlin

To walk through the city is like travelling, like being on a journey and this I like a lot. You can find so many fascinating locations here. It is inspiring, the same like it is to be part of this project, it is also very inspiring! To meet people on this platform, to discover a lot of names I have heard earlier and now I get the chance to know more about them in a quite personal way.

It is a big, interesting and exciting project. Great that you, Valeria and Andrea, took the effort to start it up and also to involve me in this!
And thanks to Hes too, your explanations are perfect!

Where have you come from?

Alien

(I come from the guts of an old Soviet war tank… I used to be an

engine, now I seem to have an identity crisis..I could be a lobster,

an alien or a useless pile of aging metal… or all of them together…)

hi ketli

Jorge Manilla   :     Introduction

Hi all,

I’m Jorge Manilla I was born in Mexico city where had my first contact with jewellery. After I finished my studies I went to belgium to discover a new point of view about jewels.

It was not easy and sometimes  very confronting ,but I’m very glad I made this desicion,

This blog will be a fantastic opportunity to tell you how this change came;

thaks Valeria and Andrea for all the organization.

Traveling versus Migration

Hi Carolina,

You are right about traveling – even when not everything is clear or known, we move within clear possibilities: the distinct time frame of a few days or weeks and also our openness during that time of what we could do and possibly undertake. And really clear is that we don’t have to fit in and make it our home. That effort isn’t at all necessary since we return again at the end to where we came from.
Migration on the other hand means that we face either having to do our best to become a part of the new place, to really make it our home, create a network of friends and work to actually feel at home because we are part of it. Or on the other hand not to involve ourselves like that and forever remain on the outside even though we live there on the inside.
For me too it’s about aligning our ‘differentness’ with the new place and create a new balance. We need to get involved and deal with so many things and connect as much as possible not to feel alien. And in that process we ourselves change too. With that change usually comes the point where we probably don’t even fit into our original society and culture anymore, while we are also not even totally into the new society and culture yet either!
So to me migration feels like trying to fit several patterns in layers that normally aren’t intended to fit. Try sewing a piece of clothing that way! – you’ll get a totally misfitting and ugly thing or maybe a totally new and exciting fashion! There’s no guarantees, the only thing certain is that migrants usually have to try so much harder to make a good life in the new home.
Even though I loved being in Amsterdam all these years (15), it was sometimes so very, very hard. When after far too many apartment moves I finally got my wonderful living and working space 3 years ago, something in me settled too. I now have that stable center that I need, am near to an airport, and enjoy being in this city close to water that gives me the feeling of being connected to the world.

Hi Christoph just testing how this works, a greeting and I am delighted to participate in this project

I couldn’t upload a photo with the text. I’m learning how to do it.

Hi Mia

I was born in Mexico City and after finishing my studies in Graphic design I lived for a while in Eugene, Oregon, USA.
It was there I discovered that contemporary jewellery was what I wanted to do. I moved back to Mexico searching for a place to study , but in the end decided to go to Barcelona to study at Escola Massana.
After having spent almost 4 years here, I’m now moving to Luxemburg.

traveller immigrant

Hi Andrea: I have been thinking about the differences between migration and traveling.

Traveling it’s a decision, were you know the times, and the plans. Vacations usually means traveling, or sometimes we travel for our work, or because we just like it. But, what about migration?

He estado pensando en las diferencias entre migrar y viajar. Viajar es una decision, generalmente se planea,  está pauteada. Se viaja cuando se está de vacaciones, se viaja por trabajo, por gusto. Pero ¿cuándo se migra?

Human migration: the permanent change of residence by an individual or group; it excludes such movements as nomadism, migrant labour, commuting, and tourism, all of which are transitory in nature. (E. Britannica)

Travel: To go from one place to another.

Talking about mobility: Елизаве́та Петро́вна

Visiting the Armoury Chamber at the Kremlin, I discovered the amazing carriages that transported the Russian royalty through the centuries. And also learned a amusing story about
Elizaveta Petrovna, daughter of Peter the Great:  in 1742 and, due to complex political motives, Elizaveta had to be crowned empress of Russia in a rush.

Elizabeta Petrovna

She had to travel, in the middle of the harshest winter, the almost 1000 km from Saint Petersburg to Moscow in just three days (when such a trip normally lasted at least seven days). She was packed in a large, ugly (well, not to me, I loved it!) winter sledge, together with two of her maids and they made the trip in just three days! The sledge would only stop to change the exahusted horses for fresh ones. The operation had to be done exactly in three minutes. Elizaveta and their maids had to eat, sleep and even use a golden chamber pot inside the sledge.

The Ugly Winter Sledge

They made it. And, in the gates of Moscow, they changed their vulgar sledge for a golden carriage. Elizaveta entered Moscow as an true empress!

The Golden Carriage!

Time to go back to home… Пoka, Москва!

Sometimes I´m homesick

Sometimes I get homesick and I realize I AM where I was born… Then, I turn to water, It is always the same water everywhere you go. You know, It actually might be….
